New School!

Today the boys start classes at the local homeschool co-op. I think they are actually excited, which is a feat indeed. They will attend every Thursday for three hours - Ari to preschool (which includes gym time and crafts) and Owen to K-2 classes (Arkansas History, States and Capitals, and Pirates). And of course, Seth will be in the nursery, which is also where I will volunteer my time, since each family is required to help out in some manner. (Eva has Montessori on Tuesdays/Thursdays.) Hopefully it goes well today. Hopefully it will make the remainder of this school year more fun for Owen. I've enjoyed homeschooling him so much - I love our quiet time spent at the table together, just the two of us. And I totally feel like I have the time and energy to continue - but he is just so defiant and rebellious about it. Especially since this second semester started up - hardly a day goes by that he doesn't get into trouble at school because he is yelling or refusing to work. If this continues, he will have to go to public school next year. I just can't handle it. I haven't made a final decision yet, but he is sure making it rough to stick it out! I just know how much I'll miss him when he's gone all day.

The good news is that Ari will start next year, so if they go public, at least they'll go together. Same school, in back-to-back grades. But what will I do with myself without the two of them here all day?

I think his problem stems from the standard old issue of respecting other adults more than one's own parents - he knows my love is unconditional and he can act crazy and I will still love him. But I really think once he's in a classroom environment with an outside adult figure, he'll work harder to impress, and certainly he won't act the way he acts at home. He's not a bad kid at all, but he is certainly opinionated on the subject of school (to put it nicely). So anyway, I'm still debating at this point. Hopefully being involved with a homeschool co-op will change all of our perspectives.
